A civilian diving team are enlisted to search for a lost nuclear submarine and face danger while encountering an alien aquatic species.

Considered the most difficult film shoot in history, most of the film was shot underwater in an unfinished nuclear container in Gaffmey. The film went on to win the 1990 Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Also nominated for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Cinematography and Best Sound.
